FOR THE RECORD, 27th January – 13th July. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
Private View, 13th February
This exhibition brings together works by female artists from two major art collections: City of Birmingham and The Arts Council Collection, and new works by West Midlands-based artists Faye Claridge and Barbara Walker. ‘For the Record’ aims to open up conversations between works of art and between artists and their contexts, ideas and narratives.
’For the Record’ explores themes of preservation, tradition, documentation and recording across a wide range of media including portraiture, landscape, sculpture and installation. Works reflect both the time in which they were made and current trends in art. Starting with the highly detailed, anthropological portraiture of Estella Canziani produced in Italy during the early 20th century, through Mary Kelly’s iconic feminist work Post Partum Document VI to the fictional world created by Turner-prize nominee Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, the exhibition explores real and imagined people, places and phenomena.
Many of these works of art challenge stereotypes and traditional assumptions. Are they records of real lived experience or imagined constructs?
